The cow farm

The Albertson’s invited my kids over for a late over.  Addie came to pick them up and they each found an angry bird shirt on the seats of the truck.  They had dinner together and exploded ivory soap in the microwave (VERY messy, I was told) and shaped it into angry birds.  They decorated these cupcakes.  So CUTE!   Here’s the story everyone told me when they got home:  While they were decorating the cupcakes Mark was talking and talking telling a story and then Sister Albertson talking to her cupcake said, “You, my friend, are very ugly.”  Mark capitalizing on an opportunity acted very offended, “Well, thanks a lot.”  Everyone got a good laugh.  Neil was SO very excited for the kids to share their cupcakes.DSC_0029

2012_08_11Jessie’s great aunt, Grandma Ruthie, paid us several visits this summer.  She is so quirky and fun.  The kids all love it when she visits.  “Yes they do, darling!”DSC_0039Neil LOVES to play with cars and trucks and the trains (although off the track more than on the track).  His favorite thing is to clear the couch (aka, throw everything on the floor), and then drive them back and forth from one end to the other lining them up again and again.  DSC_0044

Cute baby!DSC_0054After dinner one night we had a few Olympians.  Spencer and Neil would stand on the piano bench and then jump to the floor.  After they landed they would put their hands up like the gymnasts.  Neil LOVES to be like Spencer.  2012_08_111Waving good bye to dad as he leave for work.DSC_0057A sweet sleeping baby.  This fun cow blanket is from Grandma Woodward in SLC.2012_08_13Quinn came over and spent part of the day with us.  We played trains together.  The boys did a pretty good job of sharing.DSC_0066We also took a walk to the park.2012_08_132

IMG_0894For FHE our friends who live on the dairy farm just north west of here invited us over to see the cows.  It was so fun.  We saw a calf that had been born earlier that day.  Everyone got to pet her.2012_08_131Then we went to see the calves that are a little older.  Cows are really quite timid even though they are pretty curious.  They really wanted to see us, until we got up close.  Then the only people they weren’t scared of were Spencer and Neil.  We tired to feed them….but they got as far away as they could, except for Spencer and Neil.DSC_0084

DSC_0081Then we went to where the feed is stored.  Wow!  So much food.  It was totally amazing to learn all about what they eat.  Good hay, junkie hay, cotton seeds, (that’s all I can remember).  But a few more ingredients go into their feed and they eat it by the ton.  We got to play in the cotton seeds (that big pile in the background).DSC_0085

DSC_0091Even Ken joined the kids.DSC_0102We watched the cows be milked.  That guys was fast.  First you spray off the udders.  Then you wipe them off and get a squirt of milk out of each of the tits.  Then the hook up the machines and let them pump the milk out.  When the milk is gone they lose suction and come off all by themselves.  And then the cows are happy again.  The cows waiting to be milked all wanted to be the first in and were pretty noisy.  I think he said they milk them four times a day, but I can’t remember.  I may need to do a follow up post to get all the stuff right.DSC_0109For FHE treats we had cheesecake and fresh whole milk.  And boy was it delicious.  I was actually totally surprised, that you couldn’t taste all the extra fat in the milk like whole milk from the store that kind of coats your mouth.  I would have sworn the milk was only 1%.  What a totally fun night!
