The Flour Game

Two Saturdays ago after we picked Mark and Jessie up from a cousin sleepover we went to get some flowers for Ken’s mom for Mother’s Day.  Ken was working that Saturday so we didn’t really have any rush to be back home.  The kids each picked out a dahlia for her and we got some snapdragons too.  For us we got tomatoes and peppers and verbena, porchulaca (don’t you just love that word!), more dahlias and snapdragons.

Then after Ken got home planted them all along with the elephant ear and canna bulbs from my dad.  (And I am SO very serious that if anyone wants some cannas we have a ton, please come get some!!!  Just beware that you have to dig them up in the fall which is isn’t hard, but still needs to be done.) It was a great productive Saturday and that is ALWAYS such a nice feeling.DSC_0009 I found this so cute balloon wreath on http://www.howdoesshe.com/.  And Abbie and Spencer were my balloon helpers for an afternoon.  (If you want to make it Wal-marts floral pins are a quarter of the cost of the ones I got at JoAnn’s.  And instead of working around the wreath I would start with one color and spread it evenly around the wreath and then pick your next color and do the same.  For some reason our first couple of bags of balloons didn’t have very many yellows and and I was afraid we’d have to take some out to spread the color around.  Also, it took us almost double the number of balloons that she has on the instructions….but after all of that (and a few extra trips to the store for more supplies) I was so happy with how it turned out.)  And it was SO EASY!  And soon it’ll be Jessie’s birthday so I’ll even get to use it….that is if I can remember to get a hanger for it next time I’m out and about.DSC_0010Last Friday I was bored of being home, but couldn’t think of anywhere that I wanted to go.  We called up a few friends, but they were gone or already busy so instead we played the flour game with the kids.  At first they were a little skeptical of how “fun” this would be…

Poor Mark was the first to knock the nickel off the top.  Isn’t this a great shot of his reaction…DSC_0016DSC_0017 Abbie was the next victim…lucky her the nickel didn’t get buried hardly at all.DSC_0021 Spencer was actually really good at cutting the flour and avoided a fall several times.  But when it did fall it was more than he could bear…DSC_0030DSC_0031DSC_0032   So Ken retrieved the nickel for him…DSC_0033 ….and being Spencer he changed his mind…but only if we put the nickel on the top where it would be easy to get.DSC_0035-1 I don’t remember if Jessie actually knocked it over or not, but she had fun just playing in the flour and putting it on herself for decoration.DSC_0037

Didn't we play that with you before? It looks very familiar. I miss our game nights.

Your family is lovely.

I'm sure we did. I think Roy and Melissa McDaniel were there too, but I'd have to go dig out some pictures to check.

The balloon wreath is ADORABLE! I think I may need to make one of those!
I grew up play the flour game - we called it "dime in the flour" (original, huh?) We also played one called "water in the face" - they were my favorite family night games, and now they are my kids favorites!

I hope all your flowers and plants do well!

Your ballon wreath turned out so cool! I can not wait to make mine! I think I'll have to wait till I get home. No one can remember to buy and bring up the wreath I need. :-(

I love it! You got some great pictures of everyone playing the flower game! Silly Spencer!
