Disclaimer: this post is picture intense. This was one of the longer hikes that we took. It started behind the visitor center by crossing a bridge.
The trees at the beginning of this hike were also covered in moss like the ones in some of our Oregon hikes, but the farther into the forest you went the less there was of that. Weird.
Jessie and Mark also enjoyed having the backpack on with Isaac in it.
This hike had some fairy rings where the mother tree hadn’t finished rotting out yet. That was pretty cool. Kind of hard to see small, the mother tree is on the right with a hole in it near the top.
This trail also had quite a few downed trees that you could walk through.
You can really tell in this picture why they are called “Redwoods.”
Farther in on this trail there were lots of pine trees mixed in with the redwoods that I didn’t notice as much on the previous trails we had been on. Also the forest was the perfect denseness so the hike was incredibly pleasant…not to hot, not to cool.
Tired boy. I’m am so glad we have a pack for him!
A cool root formation. Some pretty flowers.
At this downed tree, that’s as tall as Ken, he spotted an enormous spider web, complete with spider. We tried so many angles trying to get the camera to focus on it. Neil got bored with the spider and did some climbing.
There were quite a few trees with hollowed out trunks that were still alive….green leaves at the top and everything. The kids really enjoyed climbing around inside them.
Neil took Mark up on a shoulder ride offer only to continuously tickle him under the chin and move his glasses down his nose. Mark took all of Neil’s silliness in stride and gave him a silly ride with only one threat as to moving his glasses down his nose again. I hope Neil remembers what a fun brother Mark is.
Mark, Neil, Emma and I got a bit behind the group again at this point. Next up were two amazing tunnels! In the pictures: the first tunnel, looking through the first at the second tunnel, looking back at the first tunnel from the second one.
Yea! another bridge. Neil loved the noise of running across the bridge and kept running back and forth again and again.
The kids were looking for a sign for their junior ranger books and found it under the ledge of this shed. At this point we decided not to continue on this trail and headed back. Here is the group in the tree tunnel.
Neil walking on the logs lining the trail.
I love holding hands pictures.
On our walk back, I think it was Mark that noticed, we found this heart log and the kids insisted that Ken and I get a picture together with it, only none of them could stay out of the picture long enough to get one of just us, so we just did the group….because we all love each other. (And Neil thought that the log was stinky even though none of the rest of us could smell anything.)
Back at the Visitor Center the kids got their junior ranger patches and I bought a few magnets for the fridge. Then the ranger asked the kids if they would like to take down the flags because it was time for them to close.
Next up….the beach!
